IRC Statement Regarding "The Passion of Christ" Film
The Board of Directors of the InterReligious Council of Central New York has affirmed the following statement:
Our community is blessed with many diverse religious communities. Through participating in the InterReligious Council of Central New York (IRC) many members of some of these communities work together and learn from each other and have done so for years. We share a commitment to respect and to value this diversity, which can only enrich our lives and better us. The IRC exists to foster, facilitate and extend cooperation and collaboration and to deepen mutual understanding between and among religious communities.
In response to the opening of the film The Passion of the Christ in several movie theaters in the area, the IRC addresses the larger community regarding our concerns. Long before its commercial debut, this motion picture was the subject of much discussion and marketing in the popular media, and it has sparked some concern that the film might unfairly portray the ancient Jewish community.
We urge the public to recognize that this film is an artistic rendering of events as seen through the lens of one filmmaker's interpretation of some passages found in Christian scriptures. Because it is ultimately a single artist's cinematic vision of events, it should not be viewed as "documentary" film footage or as representing the authoritative teachings of all Christian communities. Further, the theological perspective conveyed through the film is being presented by some as if it were the belief shared and affirmed by all Christians. In fact it is one view embraced and promulgated by only some among the many different Christian communities.
It would be utterly unacceptable - and against the very tenets of the great Abrahamic faith traditions - if the film, even unintentionally, were to evoke in viewers ill will against any one people or group. Instead, we pray that it will awaken in those who see it a desire to learn more of the complex political, historical and religious contexts of that period. Since the film raises questions and concerns, we hope that seeking responses to those issues will prompt intelligent and respectful dialogue and help further harmonious relations among and between participants in diverse religious communities.
The IRC recognizes the breadth and depth of interest that this movie has aroused. Shortly after the completion of the run of the movie in local theaters, the IRC will sponsor and facilitate a Town Meeting with an open microphone. It will be an opportunity for people to present their diverse interpretations and perspectives regarding the film and to speak with one another. The public is invited.
