LONG TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM
Linda Kashdin, Program Director

The Ombudsman Program is an advocacy program for all residents in long term care in Onondaga County.  Ombudsmen monitor the quality of care, help protect residents’ rights, assure treatment with dignity and respect, and encourage patients and residents to express their opinions and become aware of the basic rights and benefits to which they are entitled.

What is the “essence” of our work?
Our volunteer Ombudsmen establish relationships with administration, staff, family members, friends, and residents by having a weekly presence in long term care facilities.  This enables them to hear about, and often prevent, any incidents or problems.  Our staff direct calls, provide information and referral, and recruit, train, and supervise volunteers.  Training is held once a year, in the spring, and in 2006 eighteen new volunteers were certified as official New York State Long Term Care Ombudsmen.  We also conduct activities that enrich the lives of those we serve, including an annual calendar drive (calendars help residents keep track of time, and the pictures provide enjoyment and a decorative touch to their rooms).

Who do we serve?
We serve residents, families, friends, and staff of long term care facilities throughout Onondaga County.

How long has the program been in existence?
The Ombudsman Program was established in Central New York in 1993.

How many clients have been served by the program?
Countless people have been touched by our program over the last thirteen years.  Currently, over 4,400 residents in Onondaga County have access to an Ombudsman.

How does the Ombudsman Program make a difference in our community?
By serving as a voice and force for those who are often unheard, our program advocates for the rights of our clients and protects them from exploitation.  By insuring that residents receive quality care in a dignified manner, we demonstrate to the community at large the value of respect for every person, regardless of age or circumstance.

How does the Ombudsman Program’s work fulfill the mission of the IRC?
Ombudsmen affirm the dignity of all individuals in long term care.  We often assist in obtaining translators for residents who do not speak English, ensuring that they are able to communicate with staff so their needs can be met.
